Why is it important to our students’ futures?

PE provides students with the opportunity to access a variety of sports and activities in a safe environment allowing them to deal with positive and negative situations via competition. Through these experiences our students can explore social interactions, develop their communication, confidence, teamwork and leadership skills, whilst developing personal interests which can help embed a healthy and active lifestyle outside of Lighthouse School.

What does PE look like at Lighthouse School?

PE is planned using a spiral curriculum process which enables the students to revisit topics to help retain and deepen learning. There is a wide range of sports which are delivered in lessons, which can be found in the long-term plan. Each sport has been broken down and planned logically so that the chain of lessons complements the end goal of students being able to participate in competitive games.

The PE curriculum integrates with occupational therapy (OT) via the means of “sensory fitness”. This approach has been developed alongside the school’s external occupational therapist and is incorporated into the curriculum to support students with their OT targets.

PE at Lighthouse is inclusive and ambitious. There is a high-level of student engagement with many students actively participating in sports for the first time in PE lessons in Lighthouse. Students will support each other in competing effectively, and managing their emotions if they win or lose.

When students reach KS4, they can select the BTEC Sport option. We deliver the BTEC Sport Level 1 which is designed to develop the students’ transferrable skills, attributes and behaviours needed to progress to further study and ultimately employment.

What have students gone on to achieve in PE?

Since the BTEC course has been established at Lighthouse School, all students who have opted to take the course have successfully completed it with the majority of young people achieving merit and distinction.

Multiple students have joined external sport clubs after experiencing the sport at Lighthouse.

A former Lighthouse student is currently volunteering to support coach a local woman’s football team.
