Home Learning
Research shows that homework can have a significant role in reinforcing classroom learning, promoting independent thinking, and developing good study habits.
At Lighthouse School, Leeds, home learning has supported our students to achieve and exceed their target grades in a range of qualifications. Our parents and graduates have told us that home learning prepares students for future courses, where they may be expected to do additional work outside of the class.
School recognises that home learning can present challenges for many students and families. We appreciate that many students and families have negative associations and experiences of homework based on their previous experiences.
As a result, we have developed the following set of principles:
• Home Learning will be set in the form of a menu to chose from. Students can choose how many activities they wish to complete.
• Students are encouraged to complete their home learning and this will be recorded by their coach, counting towards end of term results. No sanctions will be given for not completing home learning.
• Home Learning will be meaningful and relevant to the curriculum. Students will be able to choose from a range of subjects and complete activities which encourage the application of skills covered in lessons.
• Home Learning will be manageable, balanced, and easy to follow. Students will not be given an excessive amount of work, and they will be able to complete projects over an extended period of time if that is their preference.
